A Blackberry Turned Me Green

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Over the summer when Harley's new head came on board he got a Nextel Blackberry. It's a neat little device. I had to setup a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) on the network so it could do mail/calendar/contacts/everything else over the air instead of having to sync it manually with your computer. After I played with it for a while I decided I really wanted one. After I got all working I handed it to him, haven't seen it since and learned to live without one.

Now our CFO just got one today. It's sitting on my desk while it "activates" with Nextel and my BES. Now that I'm playing with her's, I totally want one again!

I used to want a blackberry until I played with one for a little while. Now I want a Treo instead. Windows Mobile 5 just seems to let you do so much more.

I want to get AAA's GPS unit. But it costs almost $700! But it has all the AAA stuff in it, which can be updated every year. It is a magellan roadmate 800. I think Robert will kill me though. I might have to do a lot of convincing on this one. But we could have used one a few times on some trips to get out of jams, or go on another road. If I show him it, he could even use it on some business trips. (Yeah right.) Him and modern toys are not compatible. I'm still trying to get him to get a new cell phone, but he won't part with his dinosaur. Hey, I also emailed you a question. Check your email.

JR, what does WM5 let you do that Blackberry doesn't.

Cheryl, I want to get a handheld GPS also. But I can build one into the carputer I'm working on, so I'll probably hold off on that for a while.

Granted a GPS is a one-time fee for the equipment, a Blackberry (or Treo) is just a cell phone, you have to buy the phone and get a voice + data plan.

I just got the new AAA magazine yesterday and they are coming out with a new GPS unit. The magellan, RS 2.0, which I think is AAA's special version. It seems to be the same as the roadmate 3050T. For $599.99. So it is a tad cheaper, and will be available in december. I'll have to check it out, since I will have a holiday check from my one job by then and some retro going back about 2 yrs from my part time job by then. Just have to convince the king pin here. Have to catch him in the right mood, so to speak. He got a card from Braunsweiger jewelers today for an estate sale in november, that he has planned to go shopping with your mother. Cool. Timing is everything.
