Game 2

Monday, June 18th, 2007

Yesterday was the second game of the season, and our second victory! This one was much closer toward the end and finished 13-12. Their last guy up at bad looked like a real brute, but he must have twisted his knee or something because he never left the batters box after he hit the ball. Well, he did eventually but it was with a severe limp.

This team was sponsored by Jeremiah's Tavern, so I expected to get pounded based on last years experience with other Jeremiah's teams. We were pretty strong right from the start of the game, but our fielding seemed to get worse toward the end. It's ok, even though they were able to catch up to us in the end, we still held a small lead.

This is the first game I've been in where a player hit a ball over the fence onto the highway (490)! In all fairness this particular field was very shallow, but there is still a 50-60 foot high fence at the edge of the field. In this league if you put a ball on the highway it's an automatic out. They do this to prevent players from trying to cause pile-ups; 490 is dangerous enough as it is without softballs appearing out of nowhere breaking windshields. This picture is of fields 3, 4 and 5 over at Cobbs Hill. We normally play on 4, which is in the middle, but the game before ours was running late (as usual) so we played on field 5 (on the right) since it was free at the time. See how much closer 5 is to the 490 than the others? And due to its orientation, a righty batter will usually hit the ball directly at the road. I think this actually helped us is some cases because the fence stopped balls from getting too far away if they get past the outfielders. I guess this also applies to the other team, so it all evened out in the end.

All in all it was a great game. The weather was beautiful, the teams were well matched, I hit a nice double (not to toot my own horn or anything) and we won.

I would not want to be a driver on that highway.

It's not as bad as it looks, there is a 60ft fence up between the road and the fields, but every once in a while a ball will get over the fence.

It just takes that one power hitter to do it!
