Nursery Fan

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

I've heard that babies are enthralled by ceiling fans so we decided to put one up in the nursery. There was no overhead light in that right either, which always irked Rachelle, so it seemed like a good time to take care of that. She found this pastel flower-encrusted fan with butterfly pulls on uber-sale at Lowes and it seemed perfect for a little girl's room.

I had only installed a ceiling fan once before, in our bedroom, so I sort of knew what I was doing. None of the rooms on the second floor of our house have overhead lights, so I had to squeeze myself up into our attic, mount the box and run the electric. This room happens to be at the opposite end of the house from the entrance to the attic, so I had to move insulation and crawl along dragging my tools while concentrating on not stepping on the ceiling drywall and fall through to the second floor and have to start all over again.

Once I got to the right spot it didn't get any easier. I had to fish a 12/3 wire from the wall switch box at the room's entrance up into the attic and over to the new box the fan got mounted on. I had to use 12/3 because it has an extra wire in it allowing me to control the light and the fan separately, but that extra wire makes it thicker and harder to deal with. Once I got the electric done it was a piece of cake.

This particular fan could not be flush mounted according to the instructions. They didn't take into account my desire to not whack my forehead on the light globe when I walk under it. I had to cut the down-rod that connected the mount to the fan and drill some new holes, but I was able to raise the fan up a good 4 inches. I can how walk directly under and only my hair touches it! I can always make it higher later if that annoys me or I get taller.

The only pictures taken were at the very end. I meant to take more of the whole process, but I was too busy shouting profanity and coughing from the dust/insulation mix in the air in the attic.

I didn't think you were that tall to run into a ceiling fan? Or are the ceilings low? Oh..by the way..nice Fan!

That is a cute fan! You should call if you ever need a dude to help you with wiring and stuff - John is pretty handy. He hung 2 ceiling fans on our back porch to help with the humidity from the hot tub.

Maybe I will! Although I wouldn't want to subject anyone else to the wrath that comes out during any home-improvement project...
