Deathly Hallows

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

deathly hallowsI have mixed emotions about the new Harry Potter movie. I'm super excited that it's finally time for a new one, but at the same time I'm very sad that the end is in site. I felt the same way when the 7th book came out but I had the rest of the movies to look forward to. What do I have to look forward to when the movies are all done?

Rachelle and I took advantage of the available baby sitting while we were in Jersey for Thanksgiving and went to see part 1 of the Deathly Hallows. Does it still count as a date if it's at 10am? I think so.

What I really liked about the whole series, not just the movies, was how each installment got darker and more real as Harry and friends grew up. The Sorcerer's Stone is very kiddy and tame while the Deathly Hallows is much more adult and even violent at times. I'm not sure if this was on purpose to parallel Harry's growing maturity or the author's attempt at snaring and wider demographic of readers, either way it worked well.

I haven't actually read the books, but I've listened to all the audiobooks on my mp3 player. Don't get me wrong, I can read, I just prefer to listen because it allows me to multitask. I listen a lot at work to drown out the constant hum of servers. Listening to CDs gets boring since they're only like 60-80 minutes. An audiobook can be 60+ hours long. If you get the chance, you should really check out the Jim Dale version of the audiobooks, they're fantastic. This guy does a different voice for each character, which is impressive because there are a ton of characters in this series. The character voices are also the same or similar across the books too.

Yar, SPOILERS below...

Usually I think it's kind of lame when they break movies up into multiple parts. Not that the story is too long and has to span two movies, but that I have to pay twice to see the whole story. This time I'm not too annoyed with it because there really is a lot going on in the 7th book that basically all needs to be played out in order to get to the end and condensing or editing out major parts of the plot just to fit a timeframe wouldn't do it justice.

harry and voldemort

So we all know by now that Harry has to destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes before he can be killed. Since they each contain a piece of he who must not be named's soul, they must be very well hidden and very well protected. Some of them were, but some weren't at all. The cave with the locket was the perfect place. There were puzzles involved, protections, an army of zombies, you name it. That definitely seemed the most formitable to obtain. The next for me was the cup in Gringotts. Located in a vault inaccessible to humans, guarded by a dragon and anything you touch in the vault will multiply and burn white-hot. Other than those two, the hiding places and protections on the others just seemed lame. The ring was just in the Gaunt house, the diary was just given to Malfoy, the diadum was just thrown in the room of hidden things at Hogwarts with no protection at all. And the snake was still sent out on jobs.

Part one of the movie ended just after the escape from Malfoy Manor, so we haven't seen them getting the cup yet. I really hope they make that scene scary and dangerous rather than them just hijacking an elf, walking into the vault and picking it up.
