Outer Banks Vacation

Monday, August 26th, 2013

For the past few years my dad has rented the same house down in Nags Head, NC on the beach for the last week in August. This year I decided it was going to be too difficult and expensive to go with a 6 month old and 3 year old. Expecially since every year there is some SNAFU at the airport with delays or cancellations. Being trapped in an airport with small children is the absolute worst.

My mom somehow convinced me to go and that's where we were last week. I only agreed to go if we could find a direct flight. There are no direct flights out of Rochester, so we drive from Rochester to my parent's house in NJ, stayed the night there, caught a direct flight from Newark to Norfolk and then rented a car and drive the 90 miles to Nags Head. It was a long trip but I think it was better than having a connection in Newark, but maybe I'm deluding myself.

The other reason I agreed to go was that Rachelle's sister Megan was going to come along as our opare. This ended up being really nice! Meg is an early riser (unlike everyone else in my family) so she was up and happy to watch the baby first thing in the morning when we were incapacitated, which was often due to his teething and being up multiple times during the night.

Reid family vacations are usually accompanied by things like rain, noreasters, hurricanes and evacuations. This time however we had beautiful weather the entire time! It rained twice and both times were at night after a day on the beach. The second time was over the second to last night and there was a LOT of wind. We left our tent/canopy on the beach like we did every other night and it was in a crumpled heap 500 feet down the beach from where we left it the next morning. I was sad to see it go, but it was ok because there was no swimming flags up all that day and it was too windy to sit on the beach anyway. Next year we'll have to not be so lazy and take the canopy down each night. Had I known it was going to be so windy I'd have gone up there and grabbed it, but oh well.
